Leavenworth man, 19, sentenced to probation for gun shop burglary

A federal judge Friday sentenced a 19-year-old Leavenworth man to serve five years on probation for his role in a 2011 burglary of a Jefferson County gun shop.

Andrew Michael Amundsen pleaded guilty to one count of burglary and theft of firearms from a federally licensed dealer, and both sides had asked U.S. District Judge Richard Rogers to sentence Amundsen to the probation term.

In the plea, Amundsen admitted he and another man drove on May 18 to the Winchester Gun and Rock Shop where he cut an exterior power line to disable a security alarm. He then opened a rear door while, he said, a co-defendant stood guard outside. The men took 15 firearms from the store and sold some of them to two men in Leavenworth County for cash and electronics.

According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s officers recovered the several of the stolen guns from the buyers a month later. Amundsen was ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.
