Police suspect speeding, alcohol contributed to a crash on KU campus Saturday night

Kansas University police suspect speeding and alcohol contributed to a crash that injured a 21-year-old Prairie Village man Saturday night on campus.

Assistant KU police chief Chris Keary said Jonathan Chappas lost control of the 1998 Lexus car he was driving and missed the curve on northbound Sunflower Road just west of Watson Library. The car flipped over and then struck a tree at the southwest corner of the intersection with Jayhawk Boulevard.

A witness estimated Chappas was driving 40 to 45 mph in a 20 mph zone, Keary said. No one else was involved in the crash that occurred at 8:19 p.m. Saturday.

Chappas, who is not listed as a KU student, was flown to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Chappas was listed in serious condition Monday morning, KU Hospital spokesman Bob Hallinan said. Officers found evidence of an open container in the vehicle.
