Two men treated at LMH following Friday afternoon accident northeast of Lawrence

Two men have been released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a head-on crash near the Lawrence Municipal Airport Friday evening.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said the crash occurred when Ronald Barnes, 20, of Kansas City, Kan., was driving west on U.S. Highway 24-40 and attempted to pass another vehicle on the two-lane highway. A Lawrence woman in the eastbound lane swerved off the road to avoid Barnes’ vehicle, but Barnes’ vehicle collided head-on with a 1988 Honda Civic driven by 55-year-old Marc Briand of Lawrence.

The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. Friday. Briand and Barnes were taken to LMH by ambulance. No other injuries were reported, Lewis said.

Belinda Rehmer, an LMH spokeswoman, said Tuesday both men had been treated and released. Lewis said the accident was still under investigation and the report was not yet complete.
