Two Lawrence men injured Monday in rollover accident on I-35 south of Ottawa

Two Lawrence men were injured Monday afternoon south of Ottawa on Interstate 35 after they were involved in a crash with a semitrailer, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

According to an accident report, Doroteo G. Guzman, 29, of Lawrence, quickly tried to change to the inside northbound lane Tuesday afternoon to pass one semitrailer but the 2000 Honda Civic Guzman was driving instead struck a 2006 Peterbilt semitrailer that was already driving in the inside lane preparing to pass the slower-moving truck.

The Honda struck the truck’s right front corner, and Guzman lost control of the car as it skidded off the highway and rolled several times before coming to rest on its top in the northbound ditch, according to the report.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. Monday about 1 mile south of Ottawa.

Guzman was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital, and was out of the hospital by Tuesday night. The passenger in his car, Vicario Antonio-Amador, 22, of Lawrence, was taken to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, where he was treated and later released, a nursing supervisor said.

Neither the driver of the semitrailer, 53-year-old John Keith Stanley of High Island, Texas, nor his passenger was injured. All four people involved wore seat belts.
