Heard on the Hill: KU unveils sustainability plan; school marking Nirvana’s campus performance from 20 years ago; bicyclist performs stunts outside Wescoe Hall

Your daily dose of news, notes and links from around Kansas University.

• KU released its new sustainability plan (we sure do have a lot of plans these days) on Wednesday.

The 67-page document addresses all kinds of potential actions, including everything from a proposal to evaluate KU and KU Endowment properties for potential solar or wind development, to simpler things like establishing a pilot program with one KU purchasing contract to minimize packaging associated with product shipments.

The document, available here, breaks items out into those easily achievable with existing resources, and those that require more investment (but doesn’t — at least that I can tell — come up with specific ways to fund all the items it suggests down the road).

I’m curious, for those who were involved with the effort (or for the uninvolved), what’s the most interesting part of this to you, good or bad? Let me know what you’re thinking.

• Does anyone remember seeing Nirvana at KU 20 years ago?

I wasn’t really familiar with this story (though it’s probably well-known KU lore, and I’ve just missed it). But the band played in the Kansas Union ballroom 20 years ago.

KU’s Student Union Activities will show a free screening of “Nirvana — Live at the Paramount,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in Woodruff Auditorium to commemorate the 20-year anniversary.

Brad Roosa, a KU alumnus, relayed this story about Nirvana in a release on the upcoming movie. Roosa was the student who booked the band, back then just beginning, to come to Lawrence.

“‘Little did I or anyone else for that matter know that this band and that album would literally change an entire musical landscape. This band and that record, in that moment in time, crossed all boundaries. I think that’s when we all realized something absolutely extraordinary was happening,” Roosa said.

“He also recollected how the band came to Lawrence in a beat-up old van and, as it happened, that evening ended up being the night that Nirvana got their first tour bus, delivered to them right in front of the Union. They literally arrived in town in a van and left in a tour bus.”

• And, finally, thanks to a tipster who Tweeted in this video of a person doing some bicycle stunts near Wescoe Hall.

I definitely can’t do some (OK, all) of that stuff.

• Heard on the Hill is on a break until next Tuesday while I take some time off. But don’t worry, I’ll still be checking up on those tips for Heard on the Hill you submit to ahyland@ljworld.com.
