Lawrence man pleads no-contest to charge of domestic battery; prosecutors say he hit former girlfriend with glass

A 47-year-old Lawrence man pleaded no contest Thursday morning to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery after he was accused in August of throwing a pint glass and hitting his former girlfriend in the face at Crosstown Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave.

District Judge Sally Pokorny sentenced Fredrick Reese to one year on probation, and he was ordered to have no contact with the 41-year-old Lawrence woman. He must also take an assessment for domestic violence intervention and follow recommended treatment. Pokorny also found that Reese would have a domestic violent “tag” placed on his record, which is a provision of a recent Kansas law meant to track repeat domestic violence offenders.

Catherine Decena Skinner, an assistant Douglas County district attorney, said in court Thursday that prosecutors had evidence Reese and the woman got into an argument at the bar about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 27, when he threw the glass at her and hit her, cutting her on the nose. She received stitches at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Prosecutors initially charged Reese with felony aggravated battery, but the charge was reduced in exchange for the plea. If Reese violates terms of his probation, Pokorny could sentence him to serve six months in jail. He served two days in jail after his arrest.

Reese told the judge the incident “shouldn’t have happened” and said he entered the plea to get the matter over with and move forward.
