Lions soccer falls, 1-0

Lawrence High senior goalie Tanner Click was right in front of the play, but it was still a blur, even for him.

Olathe South beat LHS, 1-0 in double overtime, on Thursday. With 6:56 to go in the second overtime, a quick play ended it and left more than a few people wondering what had transpired.

“I’m not even exactly sure,” said Click, who had a couple of clutch saves. “Somehow that guy got a one-on-one, and he put it away.”

Here’s how: O-South’s Bryan Johnson and Nate Opperman, two of the top scorers in the league, were making a push to score. LHS (4-7-1) doubled Johnson while one player remained on Opperman. Opperman blew past the defender and got the ball past Click for the game-winner.

“They are legit,” LHS coach Mike Murphy said of the opposing duo.

It was simple and well executed, the complete opposite of the game itself.

Players fought and scratched for every ball and possession, and that style came with consequences. Aside from the yellow cards and no-calls, there were some plays that hurt the Lions physically.

Sophomore Parker Davies left the game late in the second half after getting hit in the head and falling to the ground. Murphy said Davies will be evaluated to see if he has a concussion.

O-South is one of the top teams in the Sunflower League, but it didn’t make the loss any easier to bear.

“We’re all angry, not with each other, just at the result,” Click said. “We played very, very well.”

Again, the Lions were in it thanks to their defense, with seniors Nick Haig, Tanner Williams and Adrian Rivera usually the first line of resistance.

They have held four opponents scoreless this season and held several others to one goal.

“That defense will keep us in games until we find a way to put it in the net,” Murphy said.

And though his team lost, Murphy enjoys these 1-0 games and their physical, grind-it-out style. The Lions have been on both sides this year.

“It shouldn’t be easy to score in soccer,” he said.

In the postgame huddle, the Lions made a pact about losing: It’s not going to happen again.

“We’re going to win every game from here on out,” Click said. “That’s our goal.”
