Douglas County prosecutors drop charges against carjacking suspects

Douglas County prosecutors have dropped charges against two people who were charged in connection with a July carjacking in west Lawrence.

According to court records, prosecutors last week asked District Judge Kay Huff to dismiss cases against Charles Erwin Reed, 20, of Kansas City, Kan., and Deondria L. Smith, 26, of Lawrence, who were both accused of participating in a July 23 scheme to lure a 28-year-old Lawrence man to the 2500 block of Winterbrook Drive, hold him at gunpoint and steal the man’s vehicle, according to Lawrence police. The man was also struck in the head.

Police in August had asked the public for help in finding Reed, Smith and a third suspect, Travis Brownlee, 33, but only the first two were arrested and brought to Lawrence.

Smith was scheduled to appear in court Monday morning for a motions hearing, but the hearing was canceled. David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney, said the victim in the case was no longer cooperating with prosecutors.

Huff did agree to dismiss the charges without prejudice, meaning prosecutors could refile charges later.
