LHS baseball falls, 3-2, in state semis

Lions to play SM East in 3rd place game at approximately 6 p.m.

The Lawrence High baseball team’s run to its second state title in three years came to an end Saturday at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark.

LHS, seeded sixth, lost, 3-2, to No. 7 Blue Valley West in a game that came down to the final at-bat.

The Jaguars scored two runs in the second, added an insurance run in the fifth and rode the right arm of Ryan Agnitsch to victory.

After struggling against Agnitsch all day, the Lions broke through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Troy Willoughby walked and scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions their first run. And Corbin Francisco singled and scored on a single from Trent Sheppard.

LHS got the top of its batting order to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but Agnitsch retired the Lions 1-2-3 to end the game and send BVW into the state championship game against top-seeded Maize.

LHS (14-10) will play for third place against SM East at approximately 6 tonight.
