Overland Park firefighters investigating blaze at new BEST building on KU’s Edwards Campus

Fire broke out early Thursday in a building under construction on Kansas University’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

The fire was reported at 12:30 a.m. Thursday on the roof of the Business, Engineering, Science and Technology building, a section of the campus that is under construction.

Overland Park fire crews brought the blaze under control within 45 minutes. No injuries were reported, and the campus was open Thursday.

Officials said late Thursday they still are investigating the cause of the fire.

The new $25 million BEST building, which is scheduled to be complete in December, consists of 75,000 square feet of space devoted to classrooms, a business conference center and labs/offices. In conjunction with the new building, the university plans to increase its Edwards Campus enrollment by 1,000 students and offer 10 new degree programs.
