Lawrence swimming coach expecting ‘pretty good meet’

With only a handful of seniors returning to Lawrence High’s swimming and diving team this spring, coach Kent McDonald was uncertain how his roster would shape up.

McDonald received two pleasant surprises when Annie Odrowski and Miranda Rohn showed up to tryouts.

Odrowski, a freshman, and Rohn, a sophomore in her first year on the LHS swim team, lead the Lions into the state tournament. The preliminaries start at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka.

“I think we’re ready for a pretty good meet,” McDonald said. “You rest them a little bit so they’ll have a bunch of energy (for state).”

Odrowski is seeded fourth in the 500 free and 13th in the 100 back.

Rohn is seeded seventh in the 100 back and 11th in the 200 IM. She took third in the 100 back (1:02.08) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:23.06) at the Sunflower League meet.

Rachel Buchner, one of two LHS seniors swimming this weekend, also will swim the 100 back.

Buchner, Odrowski, Rohn and senior Mallory Neet make up the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

The Lions’ 200 free relay team is made of Chandler McElhaney, Maddie Ruder, Mackenzie Rhodes and Neet.
