Police arrest Lawrence man accused of striking school bus with no children on board

Lawrence police arrested a 24-year-old Lawrence man Monday and cited him for leaving the scene of an accident after he was accused of striking a school bus with no children on board at 7 a.m. Monday at the intersection of 23rd and Iowa streets. Julie Boyle, a Lawrence school district spokeswoman, said the district’s contractor First Student filed a police report after the bus was rear ended and the other driver left the scene.

The bus driver was not injured, Boyle said. According to Douglas County Jail records and the accident report, a police officer later located the other vehicle involved in west Lawrence and arrested the suspect, Christopher Hernandez, on charges of leaving an accident, driving under the influence, having no insurance, driving while suspended and failing to report an accident. He posted $900 bond and was given notice to appear in Lawrence Municipal Court June 1.
