Lawrence police arrested three Topeka men Thursday morning as suspects in at least two vehicle burglaries in southwestern Lawrence.

Kim Murphree, a police spokeswoman, said a neighbor in the Aberdeen Apartments complex, 2300 Wakarusa Drive, noticed suspicious activity in the parking lot about 4:45 a.m., and officers later arrested the three men.

According to court records, Douglas County prosecutors Thursday filed charges of burglary of a vehicle and conspiracy to commit burglary against Nathaniel A. Cisneros, 19, and Damien S. Schaffer and Dalton S. Slavens, both 18. Prosecutors accuse the men of burglarizing one vehicle and participating in a scheme to drive around various locations looking for unlocked cars to burglarize and checking for unlocked cars at the apartment complex.

Murphree said the men are suspected of committing at least two burglaries in the area, but officers have recovered items and expect to connect the men to other burglaries.

Cisneros was released from jail Thursday afternoon after posting $4,500 bond and given notice to appear in court May 19. Schaffer and Slavens appeared in court Thursday afternoon, where a judge set bond at $4,000 for each of defendant.

What jokes? Topeka stealing from Lawrence is a fact like death and taxes.

topekans stealing from lawrence?

no way! that never happens, right? when will we finally begin to charge a toll at the western edge of douglas county to all shawnee county residents attempting entry? $5.00/person sounds about right. That way, we can use the money collected to pay for police to enforce the laws which the topekans break....either that, or we should just send shawnee county a bill.

serious.

Must be a new policy against pointing out the crimes Lawrencians commit vs the ones Topekans commit. LJ must feel more comfortable burying their heads.

Maybe the big-brother license plate cameras watching 6th St. nabbed them on the way out of town?

I have lived in Lawrence for nearly 30 years, and have never had a problem with crime of any kind.

I lived in Topeka for about 8 months, and quickly moved after my home was broken into.

Was that just a coincidence?

I need to correct myself, I did and still do have a very serious problem with a crime that was committed across the street from my home a bit over 25 years ago. But, that crime was done by someone from Kansas City.

Don't forget the new police chief has admitted Lawrence has one of the highest crime rates of any of the university cities of the Big 12. It is much higher than Overland Park or Olathe.

Some of this is due to predators coming in from Topeka and KCMO/KCK. We sure have a lot of burglaries and auto theft. And of course there are plenty of rapes, but most are not reported. The assaults are mostly the result of drinking and drugging.

Lawrence crime is contributed largely by those who live there. Thems the facts.

Set-up a roadblock on West Highway 10 bypass each evening from 11:00 P.M. to 5:00 A.M. and the Topeka portion of the crime contribution should go down.
