KU Med, Wyandotte County to focus on Latino health

? The Kansas University Medical Center is joining the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and other groups in a campaign to improve the health of Latinos in the County.

The medical center says Wyandotte County is ranked as the least healthy of the state’s 105 counties.

About 26 percent of the county’s population are Latinos who report less health coverage, more overweight or obese people and higher diabetes rates than Latinos elsewhere in the state.

A KU Medical Center spokeswoman says the organizations will work to promote health screenings, physical activity and healthier diets among Latinos.

A mobilization effort starts next Wednesday at the KU Medical Center School of Nursing building in Kansas City, Kan. Other groups taking part include El Centro Inc., which serves the Latino community in the Kansas City area.
