Lawrence man flees police, arrested for battery

A 20-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of aggravated battery after fleeing police.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Kirk Fultz said an officer stopped to investigate a vehicle with steamed up windows parked in north Lawrence around 1 a.m. In the vehicle, the officer discovered a 28-year-old woman with a bloody face. The woman said the suspect, who was also in the car, had beaten her and choked her with a belt.

The suspect then fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later in the 800 block of North 3rd Street after additional officers responded, Fultz said. A knife was found in the vehicle, and police continue to investigate the case for possible additional charges.

The suspect was also charged with interfering with the duties of a police officer and booked into the Douglas County Jail. No bond has been set.
