LHS soccer coach Joe Nemzer resigns

June 29, 2011

Lawrence High girls soccer coach Joe Nemzer has resigned in order to accept the assistant women’s soccer coaching job at Fort Hays State University.

Nemzer submitted his resignation on Monday evening.

“Bidding goodbye to these girls is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, and I will miss them more than I can put into words,” Nemzer said in a statement.

His departure will leave athletic director Ron Commons looking for a new head coach for the second straight offseason. Matt Anderson resigned on Dec. 1 and Nemzer was hired on Feb. 9.

The Lions finished last season with a 4-13 record and lost to Washburn Rural in the first round of regional play.

Nemzer said he appreciated the opportunity to coach a great group of girls.

“It has truly been a blessing for me to be their coach and I will always look back on my time at LHS with the fondest of memories,” Nemzer said.

This is disappointing.

I can certainly understand why Coach Nemzer is moving onto a D2 coaching position. I wish him luck.

LHS needs consistent coaching to stabilize the girls program. That job shouldn't be on a merry-go-round. I hope that the powers to be can find a coach that stays for more than a year or two.
