Heard on the Hill: KU makes old Kansas maps available online; overnight storm causes some tree damage on campus; website makes it easy to follow KU NBA Jayhawks
Your daily dose of news, notes and links from around Kansas University.
• The fine folks at the KU Libraries have put up some online access to some pretty neat old maps from the Sanborn Map and Publishing Co. from the late 19th century.
I’ve seen one of these maps in person at the Spencer Research Library before, and they’re pretty neat stuff. They were first created for insurance purposes, and now they’ve begun to enter the public domain, so they can be made available online for free.
Maps exist of 241 Kansas cities in all, from 1883 through 1922.
So if you’re bored today, go ahead and browse through them here.
• The University Daily Kansan reported that maintenance crews were hard at work on Monday clearing debris from an overnight storm.
Several limbs were down in Marvin Grove, and lightning struck at least one tree, the paper reported.
The debris will be recycled by composting leaves and limbs and grinding branches to use as mulch, a landscape maintenance official told the student paper.
• I figured I’d pass along one sports tidbit with the 2011 NBA draft just in the books. If you’re like me, and you don’t follow the NBA that much, but like to peek in on how some former KU basketball players are doing from time to time, here’s a good site for that I’ve found at basketball-reference.com.
It not only lists information on current players, it also lists stats for all 55 players from KU who have ever played in the NBA and the ABA. (I’m contractually obligated at this point to remind you that there’s a pretty good list — though without the stats — over at kusports.com, too).
It’s even got information on Cedric Hunter, who played one NBA minute in 1992 for the then-Charlotte Hornets without getting any other stats.
Hunter’s Wikipedia page says he was signed to a 10-day contract, and only played in the one minute of one game.
I bet that’s an interesting story.
