Police chase ends in crash; two suspects in late-night burglary escape on foot

Lawrence police are looking for two men who led officers on an early Friday morning vehicle chase that ended with the suspects crashing their pickup truck into a tree northeast of Lawrence and running away.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman, said an officer at 1 a.m. interrupted an apparent burglary in progress as the two men had broken into a storage shed near the automotive shop at Walmart, 3300 Iowa.

The suspects were attempting to leave, and they sped away north on Iowa Street from the officer in white and maroon Ford F-150 truck. Sarna said the officer pursued the vehicle through several streets in southern and central Lawrence.

The truck eventually drove east on 15th Street out of the city before heading north on East 1625 Road, and the pursuit ended near 1568 N. 1550 Road, which is an extension of 11th Street, when the pickup went through a field and struck a tree, Sarna said.

The two suspects, described as white men wearing dark clothing, ran away from officers and the truck.

“It is not known at this time if the occupants of the truck were injured or if the vehicle was stolen,” Sarna said.

No officers were injured, and police continue to investigate.
