Free State High School graduate is tops at U.S. Army leadership course

John Bergman, a U.S. Army cadet in Kansas University’s ROTC program and a 2008 Free State High School graduate, was ranked No. 1 out of 486 cadets in his regiment at the Army’s 29-day Leader Development and Assessment Course.

Cadets at the course are tested on physical stamina, endurance, ability to navigate over difficult terrain and team-building and leadership skills.

Thousands of cadets attend the training each year at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Bergman will begin his senior year at KU this fall, majoring in business leadership and management, and will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after his graduation.

He is the son of Ray and Kathy Bergman, of Lawrence.
