Report: Woman found in vehicle died from hypothermia; overnight temperatures dipped to 4 degrees

A coroner’s spokeswoman said a preliminary report indicated a 58-year-old Lawrence woman who was found dead in a vehicle Saturday died from hypothermia.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when a person’s body temperature drops below 95 degrees it is considered a medical emergency. The Lawrence Municipal Airport recorded a low temperature of 4 degrees overnight Friday and into Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Lawrence police have said no foul play was suspected, but an autopsy was being performed in the case.

The woman’s body was found Saturday morning in a vehicle in the alley behind a residence the 800 block of Tennessee Street, but police have said the woman did not live at the home and did not own or have any other connection with the vehicle.

Police did not release the woman’s name.
