Douglas County judge revokes bond for 18-year-old one week after robbery conviction

A Douglas County judge on Friday agreed to revoke bond for an 18-year-old Lawrence man who was convicted a week ago of robbery and other charges.

District Judge Sally Pokorny on Jan. 7 had agreed to let Jermel Fleming continue on bond until his Feb. 7 sentencing after a jury convicted him of robbery and four other charges in connection with a June robbery of a Kansas University student in the 900 block of Tennessee Street.

But last weekend Lawrence police arrested Fleming on a warrant, and prosecutors accused him of intimidating a witness in the case.

Attorneys in court Friday said the intimidation allegations stemmed from a Dec. 28 text message he sent to a Lawrence woman before the trial. Defense attorney Branden Smith had argued the woman was not subpoenaed as a witness in the case, but Pokorny ruled that was not a legal requirement.
