LHS?girls basketball falls to Leavenworth
Leavenworth ? In girls basketball coach Nick Wood’s eyes, one call shifted all the momentum in the Lions’ 52-39 loss at Leavenworth.
With time running down in the third quarter, Leavenworth’s La’Quecia Parker drove into the paint and collided with Lawrence’s Kristen Bell. Parker’s shot dropped through the net with 1.2 seconds to go, but there was a whistle.
Wood thought Bell was set and took a charge. The referee disagreed, calling the block and counting the basket. Parker hit the free throw to give the Pioneers a six-point lead at the end of the quarter.
“That set the tone, and we were chasing from behind in that fourth quarter,” Wood said.
Senior Emily Peterson led the Lions (6-13) with 13 points, and senior TaMiya Green added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Burgandie Lewis led the Pioneers with 20 points and seven rebounds, often scoring on second and third chances in the paint.
LHS plays its final game of the season on Friday at 6 p.m. against Free State.
