LHS girls basketball upended by O-Northwest

Lawrence High sophomore Anna Wright, left, and Olathe Northwest sophomore Jaylah Jackson dive on the floor as they battle for a loose ball during Lawrence High’s game against Olathe Northwest Friday, Feb. 18, 2011 in Lawrence.

Girls basketball coach Nick Wood knows it’s hard for his seniors to come to grips with the fact that they won’t play another home game.

But he also knows that they can’t let their emotions affect their play in the next couple of weeks. The Lions fell, 63-47, to Olathe Northwest on Friday night.

“The season’s not over,” Wood said. “Yeah, it’s emotional and it’s a hard thing to deal with, but we have to turn the page.”

The Lions (6-12) struggled to execute offensively against the Ravens in the first half, falling behind, 33-17, at halftime. In the second half, though, the Lions and Ravens played to a tie.

Wood said he thought that little things — making long, looping passes and not coming to the ball — really hurt the Lions’ chances.

And the fact that sophomore Michaela Crall came off Olathe Northwest’s bench to score 15 points and grab 10 rebounds certainly didn’t help matters.

The Lions’ seniors — Brittany Ray, Emily Peterson, Rachel Kelly, Kelsey Broadwell, TaMiya Green, Kristen Bell and Sami Johnson — were honored after the game.

“They mean a lot to our program,” Wood said. “They’re what Lawrence High kids are supposed to be. They’re good people on and off the court, and they compete like crazy. I can’t ask for anything more than that.”

Kelly, who has dealt with concussion-related issues all season, went to the hospital after being knocked in the head again.

Wood said her status was uncertain, but also that she might not play the rest of the season.

“Her health is the number one thing,” Wood said.

The Lions will also travel to Leavenworth on Tuesday.
