Kansas governor’s aide: Everything on table on pensions

? Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s spokeswoman says everything is on the table as state officials address the long-term funding issues faced by the state pension system.

The statement Thursday by Sherriene Jones-Sontag contradicts one made Wednesday by State Budget Director Steve Anderson.

The state pension system projects a $7.7 billion shortfall between its long-term revenues and the costs of benefits over the next few decades.

Anderson told the state Board of Regents that the governor is ruling out higher contributions by current workers in existing state pension plans or backing away from promised benefits.

Many officials already believe such steps would be legally questionable.

Jones-Sontag said she was clarifying the administration’s position. Like Anderson, she said the governor is letting the state Senate lead on pension issues.
