Douglas County prosecutors on Wednesday filed seven charges against a 26-year-old Lawrence man accused of having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl over a two-month period.

Prosecutors filed four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, two counts of criminal sodomy and one count of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

James George, Douglas County’s pro-tem judge, set the man’s bond at $25,000 cash or surety after his attorney, David Brown, said the man had no criminal record and strong ties to Lawrence.

Prosecutors accuse the man of having sexual relations with the girl at a north-central Lawrence home in December and January. Police said Tuesday that a parent of the girl made the initial report to officers.

George set the man’s next hearing for 2 p.m. Feb. 15 in front of District Judge Kay Huff.

The Journal-World generally does not identify sex crime suspects unless they are convicted.

A 26 year old knows better, no matter how much a 14 year old "wants it" (not saying that's what happened here).

Are you really blaming the victim ??? unbelievable.

I think this song sums it up: "Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent. Snot running down his nose greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes. Drying in the cold sun Watching as the frilly panties run. Feeling like a dead duck spitting out pieces of his broken luck."

Yes, it can. It's against the law to have sex with a minor.

Not only did Steely Dan sing about it, but who sang "Don't Stand So Close To Me" about a teacher and student? Was it like Sting?

Glenn Reed 4 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, it was sting. Gary Puckett sang "Young girl." It's a common-enough theme in music.

"What they already done." Nice....... Can you hear the banjo play?

It does not matter what the 14 year old wants, says they want, asks for, has done, will do, or begs to happen. The LAW says they are "off-limits" as sexual partners.

KIDS that young have been deemed (by state lawmakers across the nation) to not have enough emotional or mental maturity to make wise decisions for themselves, on many things (including entering contracts or having sex). Society, through its laws, has decided to try to protect them from themselves, and all of the ADULTS (anyone over the age of 18) are on notice of that fact. SO anyone, male or female, who has sex (willing or not) with someone underage is breaking the law. End of story.

So - Unless/until the law gets changed, anyone who has sex with someone that young is breaking the law & risking jail. Period.

Better go find someone 18 or older. Or wait a few years for your "love" to reach that age.

"KIDS that young have been deemed (by state lawmakers across the nation) to not have enough emotional or mental maturity to make wise decisions for themselves..."

Actually, in many states (and several European countries), it is legal to have sex with a 14 year old, depending on the age of their partner (usually a 3-4 year age difference, maximum). So apparently it's okay as long as you have two people making bad decisions.

Agreed. Just because a large group of people think that, doesn't make it right. As we grow (double meaning, society and persons) so does our perception of what is right and wrong and we have a DUTY to protect the young.

I stand corrected. Perhaps some places DO consider their 14 year olds wise and mature enough to enter into contracts, have sex with older people, etc. BUT the fact remains - it IS still illegal in Kansas. So, until/unless that fact changes - arguing about if it should be allowed doesn't matter one whit to those who choose to break this particular law.

As for what is allowed in other US states - could you provide a citation or link to the state law(s) that allow permit 26 year olds to lawfully have sex with 14 year olds?

Why isn't imastinker here claiming that this must have been consensual?

I hope all trolls (that pay taxes) enjoy paying for state run mental health therapy, if that is what happens to a low income victim. IF she's lucky to get into therapy.

yes there's law's but how many of us really follow it to the T. do you really think everyone is gonna follow specific laws too. some laws need to be updated and some need to be enforced. perhaps we just want to hold on to what innocent we have left, cause if we actually acknowledge it, it might show we as a people are going down hill.

It seems the internet police do not wish to allow full discussion on this topic.

Even though this girl is 14 does not mean she wasn't looking for sex. So what if the guy is 26. What if he was 16 or 18 would there be this outcry of disgust? Age isn't the factor. It is called morals and proper decorum. Young people today think nothing of being overly sexual.

some 14 yr old are way to mature for thier age. they can fool you, lie until its too late, the same way with boys. parents are to blame to let their youth run wild and unsupervised.
