— The Lawrence High wrestling team placed first at the 22-team Eudora Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

Lions seniors Reece Wright-Conklin (182) and Nick Pursel (170) were undefeated and took first place in their respective weight classes. Five LHS wrestlers made it to the finals of the tournament.

LHS coach Patrick Naughton said his team’s 6-0 start in the morning set the tone for the day. Naughton praised his team’s consistency and said his wrestlers had only two bad rounds in which they gave up points they should have won.

“It’s definitely something to build on for the rest of the season,” Naughton said.

Lawrence High will wrestle next in a dual versus Gardner-Edgerton on Tuesday.

Way to go LHS!! It was a great tournament and a great win for the wrestling program. And pretty sad coverage from our local paper. This is a major tourney and we get no reporter and no photographer? We took 12 wrestlers (not a complete 14 man team) and 10 of those made it into the bracket rounds which in pretty incredible. Of those 10, eight wrestlers actually medalled with 5 making it into the championships, which is awesome! Sorry you guys were too busy to cover it. It was a great day to be a Lion! (not such a great day for the LJW)

Congrats to LHS. LJW - the wrestling team wins a 22 team tournament and this is all you can muster up for an article? They are currently ranked #1 in 6a. How about some coverage and respect this season? terrible.
