LHS baseball blanks Olathe East

? Garrett Cleavinger pitched a complete-game, one-hitter and Lawrence High’s baseball team shut out Olathe East, 4-0, on Tuesday.

Cleavinger had his no-hit bid broken up in the fifth inning. He walked three and struck out 10.

“He was really special,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “He was going right at guys, throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes. I’m very proud of him.”

So did the no-hitter enter the LHS coach’s mind once Cleavinger started sending Hawks batters to the bench?

“Well, the way baseball is, no one even thinks to bring it up,” Stoll said. “But in the back of your mind, you’re thinking, ‘He could throw a no-hitter.’ Once they got that hit, we started talking about how special it could have been.”

The Lions ran the bases exceptionally well, stealing eight bags. Ross Johnson led the way with three swipes.

“We put a lot of pressure on them,” Stoll said. “The kids were getting great jumps.”

Lawrence (8-5) will face Shawnee Mission South on Thursday at LHS.
