April 26, 2011

Former Lawrence High basketball standout Taylor Bird, now a sophomore at Johnson County Community College, recently was named an NJCAA All-American after leading the Cavaliers to a fifth-place finish at this year’s NJCAA D-II national tournament.

Bird became just the sixth player in JCCC history to earn first-team All-America honors.

Bird started all 72 career games at JCCC and was the team’s second leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 10.4 points and 9.1 rebounds.

She also ranked second in assists (136) and led the team in steals (64).

Bird has also left her mark on JCCC’s all-time charts. She is one of six players in school history to finish her career with more than 700 points and 600 rebounds. She ranks 20th all-time in scoring (770), fifth in rebounding (630), eighth in rebound average (8.8) and seventh in assists (273). She also set the career rebound record for a JCCC player at nationals with 55.

During her two seasons, JCCC enjoyed a 62-10 record and two NJCAA top 10 Tournament finishes.

As a junior at LHS, Bird helped the Lions capture the Class 6A state championship.

The 5-foot-9 forward recently committed to Eastern Michigan.
