Calling it a night: Lightning postpones LHS football (down 21-9) until Saturday

Lawrence High cheerleaders leave the field as severe weather moves into the area forcing a delay in the Lawrence High vs. Shawnee Mission East game with 7:27 left in the second quarter. With Lawrence High trailing, 21-9, the game will be made up at 2 p.m. today at Shawnee Mission North District Stadium.

? The Lawrence High football team bolted from the sidelines to the locker room moments after Shawnee Mission East took a 21-9 lead in the second quarter on Friday night.

The Lions weren’t giving up. They were seeking shelter from the lightning storm about to engulf Shawnee Mission North District Stadium.

LHS coach Dirk Wedd said the weather-caused postponement — the teams will continue the game at 2 p.m. today at the same stadium — couldn’t have been timed much better.

East senior quarterback John Schrock had just led his team on a 90-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Grant Ellis in the middle of the end zone. With the Lancers leading, 21-9, and 7:27 remaining in the second quarter, the teams lined up for the ensuing kickoff before a referee halted play and sent both teams to their locker rooms.

“I just think you have to be positive in this situation,” Wedd said. “I’ve probably had 10 games like this. I’ve seen it a lot of times. I know this — one team will come back ready to play and one team won’t. It almost always happens like that. It’s our goal to be the one ready to play.”

Lawrence will take the kickoff with 7:27 left in the second quarter. The Lions also will receive the second half kickoff.

“There’s a lot of positives,” Wedd said.

The lightning storm ended a mistake-ridden night for the Lawrence kicking teams. After East senior receiver Quan Brunt returned the opening kickoff 98 yards down the middle of the field, the Lions found themselves down seven points with less than 15 seconds elapsed.

Junior kicker Anthony Rosen converted a 25-yard field goal to put Lawrence on the scoreboard, but a bad snap on a PAT after an Aaron Gile 48-yard interception return kept the score at 9-7.

An illegal procedure penalty on a kickoff, the second of the game for Lawrence, gave East a short field, and Schrock led the Lancers to another touchdown, putting East ahead, 14-9.

Later, the Lions missed an opportunity when Brunt muffed a punt at the Lancers’ 15-yard line. A mad scramble ensued, but East recovered the fumble and methodically marched down the field, making the pre-postponement score 21-9.

“I thought the kicking game killed us,” Wedd said.

The teams waited in the locker rooms for a little over an hour before the game was officially postponed. Fans were sent to the Shawnee Mission North gymnasium or to their cars, but a majority of them left before the final decision.

Some Lawrence players are taking the ACT this morning, but Wedd said it would be over by noon and that the team wouldn’t have left Lawrence before then in a normal situation.

Wedd has encountered this type of game before.

“I’ve won some and lost some,” Wedd said. “In Kansas, this happens. You have to be ready.”
