KU scholarship hall temporarily evacuated after dryer catches fire

A fire in a dryer at Kansas University’s Stephenson Scholarship Hall caused an evacuation for more than an hour early Thursday morning.

Capt. Schuyler Bailey, KU Public Safety Office spokesman, said the call came in at 2 a.m.

Crews discovered smoke inside and found the fire was contained to a dryer.

“The building is safe. They’ve been let back in,” Bailey said. “There is a strong odor of smoke in the building.”

The scholarship hall is at 1404 Alumni Place near 14th and Louisiana streets.

KU spokeswoman Jill Jess said the university was still waiting on a damage estimate.
