State fire marshal’s office seeking clues to who set fire in house near Lecompton

The Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating an arson fire at an abandoned home near Lecompton during the weekend.

On Monday, chief Investigator Rose Rozmiarek said all accidental causes have been ruled out for the fire that destroyed a home in the 1700 block of East 50 Road. The investigation is still open, but the fire marshal believes the cause was arson.

The same home was the site of a small arson fire more than a year ago. Last month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued several criminal trespass warnings on the property.

On Saturday, a call came in around 3:40 a.m. that flames could be seen coming out of the home. When the Kanwaka Township Fire Department arrived on scene the home was in flames from the basement to the roof.

Rozmiarek encourages anyone with information about the fire to call Douglas County crime stoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477) or the state’s hotline 800-572-7463.
