Trial scheduled for January on child-solicitation charges

November 3, 2010

A Douglas County judge on Wednesday set a Jan. 31 trial for a 32-year-old Lawrence man accused of soliciting a child on the Schwegler School playground in September.

Antonio L. Nelson pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child in District Judge Michael Malone’s courtroom. Nelson had waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors accuse Nelson of making comments to try to entice a 10-year-old Lawrence girl to commit or submit to an unlawful sexual act.

A girl in the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence after-school program at Schwegler, 2201 Ousdahl Road, reported the incident to adult supervisors on Sept. 20. Police arrested Nelson several days later near 18th and Ohio streets.

Nelson remains in custody on $40,000 bond.

Glad to see the Journal World has finally gotten rid of the don't identify the suspects until they are found guilty policy.
