Kansas University senior Jamal R. Greene, 22, a defensive tackle from Kansas City, Kan., has been arrested on charges of attempted aggravated robbery and no longer is a member of the KU football team, according to Associate Athletic Director Jim Marchiony.

“He’s off the team,” Marchiony said.

Greene, a candidate to start on the Jayhawks’ defensive line this fall, was one of two people arrested in connection with an incident early Friday morning.

The other man arrested was Vernon D. Brooks, 23, a former KU linebacker, who played sparingly in 2009 and was dismissed from the team on the opening day of spring practice by new coach Turner Gill. Gill said Brooks had been dismissed “due to violation of our team policy.”

As for Greene, Gill consistently praised the K.C.-Washington High graduate for his play and leadership this spring. However, when the post-spring depth chart was released, Greene was listed on the second team.

Lawrence police Sgt. Bill Cory said Greene and Brooks were arrested after an attempted armed robbery about 1:30 a.m. Friday at Tuckaway Apartments, 2600 W. Sixth St. In a release, Cory said officers were told that two men, armed with a handgun, had entered the apartment and forced several people in the apartment to the floor.

After the two men left, occupants called police.

One of the victims provided officers with a description of a vehicle, and about an hour later Kansas University police stopped that vehicle and took Brooks into custody. About 9 a.m., officers found Greene in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive.

A handgun also was recovered during the investigation, but Cory said no one was injured in the incident at the apartment.

Marchiony said he did not expect Gill to comment.

“The action speaks for him,” Marchiony said of Gill dismissing Greene from the team.

Greene, 6-foot-4, 328 pounds, was a reserve defensive lineman last season, playing in nine games and recording six tackles. In his three years at KU he played in 29 games and recorded 34 tackles. He started eight games as a sophomore in 2008 and recorded 21 tackles.

Greene’s dismissal thins out the defensive tackle position. Juniors Patrick Dorsey (6-0, 273 pounds) and Richard Johnson Jr. (6-3, 283) were listed with the first team on the most recent depth chart and sophomore Darius Parish (6-4, 327) was a second-teamer.

Sophomore John Williams (6-3, 290) and red-shirt freshmen Randall Dent Jr. (6-5, 275) and Shane Smith (6-5, 278) round out the list of existing defensive tackles. Incoming freshman Jeremiah Edwards (6-1, 308) also could compete for playing time at the position.

Caroline Trowbridge, Journal-World assignment director, contributed to this story.

WY- This was in my apt complex and I couldnt get out that AM because the cops had the cars on the right of the car blocked in. I had to get out and had to find out where they were so I could leave. I was wondering why a couple of hours later they were pounding so loudly i could hear them in my apt and they were all over the parking lot (5 cop cars)

come on, Kealing, is this to be allowed? you guys make rules to address this kind of bigotry and then don't follow them, then bug someone else out for reasons only you can fathom. how about it?

thebigspoon 7 years ago

thanks, jon--now you can remove my previous post--no need to keep it. and thanks.

thebigspoon 7 years ago

iat and n_h, the post came far before you read the offensive object of the post, apparently, so, no, it makes no sense by itself. However, I do not apologize for the removal request, and am also sorry it offends your sensibilities. It is now out of context and you can request removal if you like. The point is that the offensive post can no longer be read and that was the reason for it. Thanks for your oversight.

danemary,I don't know where you're from but that word is as bad as the N word. Have suggested removal.

Flap Doodle 7 years ago

Is that word as bad as "cracker"? Cause the LJW seems to have no trouble with that....

stuckinthemiddle 7 years ago

~chuckle~ I've been called a "cracker"... it made me chuckle...

not sure many people with African ancestry would chuckle at being referred to as "darkies"...

I understand that... the difference is clear to me...

No one cares about your faux outrage, cracker.

ksjayhawk74 7 years ago

People in Europe use the term "potato" which is even funnier than cracker

Kansas trivia question:

I noticed a plate once that had a "SO" county decal on it. I had to ponder a while to identify the county....

The challenge for all you smart forum members is to tell me the Kansas county... Ready, set, go.......

(I'm betting Autie gets this first)

Jason Nowak 7 years ago

There isn't one. It was probably either SC or SD, Scott or Sheridan counties.

RoeDapple 7 years ago

Hmm, not shown here. You ain't gonna tell me autie got one of them southern Kansas counties to secede and join up with the Okies now are you Boston? Wait! A key word in your 7:37! "was"?

gphawk89 7 years ago

There is no "SO" county. But there is an Osage county. Upside-down sticker.

Boston_Corbett 7 years ago

Ding Ding Ding Ding...... We have a winner.

gphawk89 wins the contest.

Our friends in Osage County have a trick up their sleeve to show their disdain for government and the Department of Revenue. Either that, or someone just wasn't paying any attention.

This was back in the day when you would get a decal when you got your tag. I wonder how many Shawnee County residents were pretending to be from Ness.

jbiegs 7 years ago

Regardless of the tag on the car, the person they were looking for lives in Lawrence!!

somebodynew 7 years ago

Well, the only one on the DG Jail list this morning possibily fitting the charges, actually lists a Lawrence address. Granted it is an apartment complex, but who knows??

Nice safe gated community you've got there Tuckaway.

Used to be, did they take them down?

gphawk89 won the prize. The OS sticker was applied upside down.

Run that one through your computers.

Consumer1 gets .3 of a point for identifying that Finney County had the Sequoyah name in its history. Actually the two counties of Sequoyah and Buffalo were combined to become Finney. Later on, Garfield County was merged onto the upper right part of Finney County giving it the L shape it has today.

But none of these three previous county names (Sequoyah, Buffalo, and Garfield) existed when the two-letter county codes were adopted for use as county codes on license plates. Originally, Kansas counties were numbered 1-105, and the county number was the rank order by population.

Topeka Capitol Journal is reporting it was Vernon Brooks and Jamal Greene. Say goodbye to your playing days Jamal. Unbelievable, how stupid can you be?

Yep. Turner gets to make an example out of someone right away.

KMBC in KC is reporting it is a KU football player too. Why hasn't the LJW reported this yet? Curious that new outlets from other towns will report something that happens in Lawrence, but the LJW is always late to the game.

So sad to see someone at a crossroads with a choice between a university education & felony assault with a weapon and is willing to choose the latter. One can only hope that as a result of his choice, that this will be his LAST brush with the law.

you appear to enjoy making thinly-veiled racist comments. please tell me you're one of the delightfully cliche bigots who uses so-called "reverse racism" (i.e., the existence of the term "cracker" despite it's complete impotency as an epithet) as an excuse to relatives and acquaintances when you toss around the N word at social gatherings to which you likely weren't invited.

puddleglum 7 years ago

they are definitely NOT 'wise latinas'

and not afro-american 'scholars'

maybe just poor decision makers who happen to not be white?

Eric Neuteboom 7 years ago

Very nice to have swift discipline in a case like this. I'm sure Mangino would have buried this or would have mumbled through some excuse for keeping him on the team. Good job Coach Gill!

kujayhawk 7 years ago

No, Mangino would have tried to kill him.

Majestic42 7 years ago

No, Coach_Eric was right. I'm surprised that Lew allowed Gill to boot them. Usually if an athlete is involved in something, you either hear about once or none at all. It's a racket they have going to save the teams. Remember the huge fight between the basketball and football teams? No suspensions, no arrests, nothing but wrist-slaps. Remember the Morris twins shooting someone with a BB gun? No suspensions, no arrests, nothing but wrist-slaps. If it were any other KU student, they'd be evicted, expelled, and dropped from everything. In this case, it looks like the "KU Athletes are Gods" mentality may have finally dissolved.

Vinny1 7 years ago

And on what grounds would any student be expelled?

And how was anyone supposed to be arrested in a "fight" where nothing more than a little name calling happened?

You sound like the nerdy kid who was never picked for any team and now you're trying to make up for it.

Majestic42 7 years ago

Have you ever lived near the KU athletes? Have you ever seen how most of them behave? I have for a while, and most of them behave like they can get away with anything. I know, because I've experienced it firsthand. And thanks for the childish name-calling. It's been awhile since someone called me a nerdy kid.

Graczyk 7 years ago

Right. Fights or other idiocy never happened under Mangino. He ran a clean program where every player stayed in line.

C'mon man. How can you even say something like that?

Alabamastreet 7 years ago

WY county FTW! I had it nearly right at 5:23 a.m.

PatKirk 7 years ago

I don't understand. These guys played football at KU. In Lawrence the term Football Player means "Hero". These two men attended college. They probably had futures. WHAT is WRONG with people?

Vinny1 7 years ago

In Lawrence the term "Basketball Player" means hero. The term "Football Player" doesn't mean much of anything unless you're a Todd, Kerry or Stuck.

99% chance this is drug related. Here is how these robbery's usually work: Johnson County kid smokes weed in HS Johnson County kid comes to KU and continues to smoke weed, buying it from his KC contact Johnson County kids friends at KU ask for him to get them some weed Johnson County kid suddenly starts selling more weed at KU and making some good money Johnson County kid sells weed to some friends of friends Friends of Friends see Johnson County kid with a lot of money and decide he would be easy target to rob for both weed and money

Most robberies like this follow this storyline.

pizzapete 7 years ago

yep, I was thinking the same thing. Break into an apartment with a gun? Sounds like drugs, and maybe more than just weed to me.

Kendall Simmons 7 years ago

Poor Mark Mangino. He was too weak and pitiful to stand up to Lew Perkins. He felt sooooo intimidated that he didn't dare dismiss any player that Lew wanted kept on the team, regardless of what that player did.

I can hear it now (not):

M: "This guy just committed armed robbery. I'm going to dismiss him." L: "No you're not. He's a projected starter and the alumni are demanding a winning season" M: "Armed robbery! The guy committed armed robbery!" L: "I don't care. If you dismiss him, I'll fire you." Chancellor Hemingway: "Sorry, Mark. You need to do what Lew says. He intimidates me, too."

Does anyone honestly believe that, were this bogus scenario actually true, Mangino wouldn't simply point out that the national media would absolutely love the story and the alumni would be outraged that Mangino was being forced into keeping a player who had just committed armed robbery?? (Or was a drug dealer. Or a rapist. Or had punched a football coach in the face. Or...well, you catch my drift.)

And don't even think of suggesting that "Mangino couldn't/wouldn't say anything to the media under this scenario because he'd lose..." whatever because of his contract. Lew himself would be gone. And the alumni would be on Mangino's side. Mangino wouldn't lose anything.

If Mark Mangino kept questionable players on his team, it was because he chose to do so. Yes, I hope the new Chancellor stands up to Lew. But it's silly to think Mangino wouldn't have stood up to him, too, in such situations.

jbiegs 7 years ago

These players became a product of their environments. If they had been living somewhere other than Lawrence they would probably be studying in the Library right now. I highly discourage any student athlete who is thinking about attending KU from ever stepping foot in Lawrence. The stinch from all the hippies and homeless running around Mass St. should be reason enough to stay away. Just ask yourself...do I want to go to KU and listen to all that tree hugging nonsense....or do I want to go to a real University and get a real education. GO CATS

tomatogrower 7 years ago

I thought hippies didn't own guns? You good ole boys have a hard time keeping your stories straight.

Maybe they are still studying for finals in Manhattan but here in Lawrence they usually study before finals are over :)

Whatever happened to "due process." I was under the impression that in the US a defendant was presumed innocent until proven guilty. Or did they confess and the LJ-W not cover that? But even so confessions can be recanted.........

Liberty275 7 years ago

If he's actually guilty, this is unbelievable. How can you make it onto an elite college athletic team then ruin your shot by doing something as dumb as robbery? Seriously, how bad do you need money that you would steal, especially if you have a very bright future ahead of you.

It's a sad day.

parrothead8 7 years ago

What's this "elite college athletic team" you speak of?

Uhjh 7 years ago

Thank you Tuner! Kicking this kid off the team was great. This is a new era in KU football with a new coach we do not need people talking about the past. Personally, I welcome this type of disciple. It is refreshing to see a swift decision based on behavior and not the value to the team. I am looking forward to a good football season. All you negative Nancy’s just shut the freak up and get a live elsewhere, period!
