The Kansas men's basketball team led its conference in attendance for the 24th straight year, once again posting the Big 12's highest attendance numbers during the 2009-10 season.
KU averaged 16,433 fans per home game, which ranked ninth nationally. That included 18 games at Allen Fieldhouse and one "home" game played at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., which also was included in the home season-ticket package.
“There is no doubt we have the greatest fans in the country and this run since the 1980s is a testament to that,” KU coach Bill Self said in a release.
Since the 1977-78 season, KU has posted a top-10 attendance figure nationally 16 times.
For all games in the 2009-10 season, Kansas ranked eighth with 562,726 fans, which also was first in the conference.
The Big 12, meanwhile, set a home attendance average record of 11,214, ranking third among all leagues.
KU currently has a 147-game sellout streak in Allen Fieldhouse.

How can KU average 16,433 fans when the official seating for Allen Fieldhouse is 16,300

Because we're awesome and everyone in the B12 wants what we have in b-ball. National prominence, great fans and great players. And one of the top coaches in the game. We rock, and KU b-ball is one of the best sources of publicity for this little ol' city of ours. That explains it.

The article says that the average included the game at the Sprint Center which probably has more seating than 16,300. So with every game selling out and including that game, you come out with a higher number than capacity at the Fieldhouse.

That's very nice, but ultimately as inconsequential as baseball attendance. Football is what drives college sports - every other sport is in the back seat.
There were a slew of conference re-alignments a few years back (hence the Big 12), and the ground is rumbling again - and it's all completely football-driven. The game between the Hawks and the Tigers will soon be a non-conference game...and basketball, baseball, softball, and the rest will go wherever football takes them.
Not putting the team down - just recognizing reality.
