2031 Quail Creek Drive
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews responded to a house fire around 7 p.m. Wednesday, near Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive.
Emergency dispatchers said the fire was reportedly contained to the wall and ceiling of the home at 2031 Quail Creek Drive.
Neighbors at the scene said they heard a loud boom around that time, as a thunderstorm was rolling through Douglas County.
When crews arrived on the scene, the building's residents were safely standing in the front lawn. Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home, which sits alongside Alvamar Golf Course.
It was unclear Wednesday whether lightning had caused the fire, but neighbors said they had their suspicions.
"I was taking a nap in my room with finals week and I just heard a loud bang," said John Zerger, a Kansas University student and area resident. "It sounded like thunder was really close and then I heard sirens going crazy down the street."
Fire crews worked for nearly two hours to contain the fire and clear the smoke from the building.
Douglas County emergency management director Teri Smith said she had no information as to whether the incident was caused by the storm.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Rob Kort said Wednesday night that no damage estimate or cause was available for the incident. Kort said the investigation into the incident would continue Thursday.
