Thomas Morefield and Maren Roesler are not typical Jayhawk and Wildcat basketball fans.
They’re dating.
The Kansas City, Mo., couple has been together for about a year and a half and embraces the rivalry between the two universities. They two, dressed in clashing school colors, stood overlooking a sea of purple, crimson and blue Saturday afternoon in Kansas City’s Power and Light District. The fact that Morefield graduated from KU and Roesler from KSU only strains their relationship a few times each year.
“During games,” Morefield said.
While the couple felt comfortable enough surrounded by fans from both rival teams, the two said they’ve been careful with their basketball appearances. Neither has taken in a game in the rival’s home arena.
“We’ve stayed away from the other person’s venues,” Morefield said.
Roesler also admitted she didn’t cheer as much as her partner did during Friday’s semifinal matchups. The score of the Kansas State game had her more worried than excited.
The Wildcats advanced after closing out a seven-point victory against the Baylor Bears Friday evening to set up the third meeting of the season with the Jayhawks. Kansas won the previous two, and Morefield said Roesler might have something to do with it.
“When we’ve watched games together KU has never lost,” Morefield said.
Morefield is hoping watching the game Saturday as a couple will help the Jayhawks come out on top once more.
