The Big 12 Conference announced Sunday the following All-Big 12 award winners for the 2010 season:

• Coach of the Year: Frank Martin, Kansas State

Martin led Kansas State to an 11-5 record in the Big 12 and a 24-6 mark overall. The Wildcats finished in a three-way tie for second place in the conference. The coach has improved his team's overall record in each of his three seasons.

• Newcomer of the Year: Ekpe Udoh, Baylor

Udoh, a transfer from Michigan, anchored a Baylor team that went 11-5 in conference play. The 6-foot-10 junior forward averaged 13.4 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game and a league-best 4.1 blocks per game.

• Sixth Man of the Year: Jamar Samuels, Kansas State

Samuels provided Kansas State with rebounding and scoring boosts off the bench in 2010. The 6-foot-7 sophomore forward logged nearly one point every two minutes and 5.2 rebounds per game. Samuels scored 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting in 20 minutes against Kansas in January.

• Freshman of the Year: Alec Burks, Colorado

Burks carried a huge portion of Colorado's offensive load as a freshman. The Grandview, Mo., native played 30 minutes per game, scored 15.6 points per game and made 53.6 percent of his field goal attempts. Burks was the Buffs' second-best per-game rebounder and scorer in 2010.

• Defensive Player of the Year: Cole Aldrich, Kansas

Aldrich finished the season ranked second in the Big 12 in blocks and second in defensive rebounds. The 6-foot-11 center blocked 13.2 percent of KU opponents' shot attempts and collected 9.7 rebounds per game. Despite his aggressive play, the Minnesota native was whistled for just 2.5 fouls per game, 24th most in the conference.

• Player of the Year: James Anderson, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State wing Anderson posted the Big 12's best offensive numbers in 2010. He made (and attempted) more field goals than any other player and averaged a league-high 22.8 points per game. The 6-foot-6 junior also corralled 5.9 rebounds per contest.

Are those the only two all big 12 conference awards? Congrats...

  2. jkealing (Jonathan Kealing) says…

They're announcing them every 10 minutes between 11 and 12:20. So we'll be updating as they come.

  3. cheeseburger (anonymous) says…

They must have voted for Martin before Iowa State beat KSU at the 'octagon' yesterday! The award could have gone to either Martin or Self, and typical of Self, he said Martin ought to get it.

  4. BruceWayne (anonymous) says…

so I guess we are just going to overlook Frank Martin beating up a player during a timeout?
Mangino and Leach fired on a rumor. Martin coach of the year after his abuse seen on live TV.
    Just win baby.

  5. sundancewierdo (anonymous) says…

Ok, thanks jkealing. I was totally confused!

  6. maxcrabb (anonymous) says…

BruceWayne- Did you see the same clip I saw? It was a missed low-five at best, and a pathetic slap at worse. I've seen 4 year olds hit better than that.

  7. fshsbird (anonymous) says…

abuse is in the eye of the beholder. if your program has been pathetic for a generation. then cussing, slapping, verbal abuse, is just overlooked. If coach self or any other big time coach looked like coach Martin, it would not be tolerated.

it's not like he's bobby knight... no throwing chairs, kicking players, yet. Let's not forget that bobby knight also coached one of the dirtiest players ever...isiah thomas. Martin's intense, but he's not that bad.

  9. irunsowhat (anonymous) says…

BruceWayne -- Martin admitted to the mistake. Mangino, Leach and Leavitt all denied anything happened. There was no need for Martin to be investigated and have the information come out that he had lied. Martin may be intense and ask a lot of his players, but they respond. He's a good coach -- end of story.

    Self should have won COTY.

KU held down #1 ranking throughout much of the season and will likely regain the distinction in a few hours if they haven't already. That is publicity for the underrated Big 12 that cannot be gotten any other way. When Dicky V and others have a hard on for the Big East and KU continuously wins games that other teams wouldn't, it was quite satisfying to see them remain at the top.

It was a nice gesture by the Big 12 to give it to Martin. Makes them look like a bunch of idiots though.

Martin deserved coach of the year. Xavier Henry not even making 3ed team shows you how much he has dropped this year. Too bad, not being able to go to pro after high school has cost him money.

  12. Brave21Hawk (anonymous) says…

If KU would have run the table in conference I think Self would have been COY again. I can't argue with Frank even though I can't stand watching him on the sidelines. I'll still take Bill Self over Frank Martin as my coach any day of any year

Congrats to Cole, X, Marcus, and Sherron!! Lets Rock Chalk to the conference championship and through the NCAA.

  13. Tootieonskates35 (anonymous) says…

The Coach of the year and Freshman of the year are a joke! Congrats to Kansas Jayhawks as a team as you rally for the Championship! rock chalk!!

  14. RalphGage (Ralph Gage) says…

    Yuk yuk yuk.
    Rock Chalk Jayhawks.

  15. fshsbird (anonymous) says…

K-State is the most painful team to watch. I would like to know on average, how many times the whistle blows per minute during their games. I thought Mizzou was painful, but even they are nothing like the Wildcats. Just like the NBA, they will clean up the game in a year or two. People will get tired of watching that kind of basketball.

  16. jaywalker (anonymous) says…

Wow. Four 'Hawks get honors and this is the comment thread? The majority of ya don't have a clue.

Martin is hands down COY. He might even get national honors over Boeheim, but I doubt it. His 'incident' with Pullen was a joke. His mannerisms? What's it to you?!
Anderson for POY is more than justified, though James would have been solid too.
I only wish Marcus Morris coulda got first team; think he averaged close to double-double in conference play. But you can't take anyone off that first team.

  17. weeslicket (anonymous) says…

personally, i think cole aldrich is not only the most dominateing payer in the big 12.
he is the most dominating player in the nation.

  18. thebcman (anonymous) says…

Tweety Carter is a great name, but name of the year honors should go to OU's Tiny Gallon (weight 300 lbs)

  19. kujayhawk (anonymous) says…

The Big XII coach of the year award should have an asterick next to it explaining Self must not be eligible for the award. An 11-5 coach gets it over a 15-1? And wasn't Texas predicted to win the league this year due to the schedule?

  20. CWGOKU (anonymous) says…

Coach of the year is a joke. Martin finished in a three way tie for second and won Coach of the year?! Sad.................

  21. weeslicket (anonymous) says…

martin is a good pick for big 12 coach of they year, if not national coach of the year.
the k-state team came together as a team, even though most of their individual players were not pre-season first tems picks.
coach martin worked wonders with his squad, and that recognition should be acknowledged.

aside: since when were 6 players picked for top honors on 1st, 2nd, 3rd or honorable mention teams?
