2 hurt in separate fights

Lawrence police on Sunday morning investigated two separate violent incidents in the city.

The first one happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 2100 block of Quail Creek Drive. A 30-year-old Lawrence man was found there with serious head injuries. He was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital but refused treatment.

According to police, as they were driving the man home, he recognized the suspect’s vehicle. Sgt. Ted Bordman said two men were questioned. One of them, a 22-year-old Lawrence resident, was taken into custody on allegations of aggravated battery.

Bordman said authorities are not sure what caused the man’s injuries.

At 4:15 a.m. police were called to the second incident. In the 1700 block of West 24th Street, police found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest.

Amanda Freeman, who lives in the neighborhood, said, “It’s scary to think someone would do that here, especially so close to where I live.”

The stabbing victim was rushed to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. His condition was unknown later Sunday.

Bordman said a language barrier created problems while investigating this case. A resident in the area said police briefly detained him, believing he was the suspect, “I say ‘no that’s not my name, my last name is Navarro,'” Aristeo Navarro said. “They started with my arms and everything. I say, ‘no, why do you do that to me?'” Navarro said the officers showed him a picture of their suspect, and he was able to point them toward an apartment complex where the suspect lived.

A 24-year-old Lawrence man was arrested for the stabbing and booked on allegations of aggravated battery.
