Woman airlifted to area hospital after injury accident

A Lawrence woman is listed in fair condition at Kansas University Hospital following an accident south of Lawrence Wednesday night that knocked out power to hundreds of people and shut down the road all night.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Lewis identified the driver as Tracy Bruce, 38.

Bruce was driving east on County Road 458 around 9 p.m. Wednesday, when she missed a curve in the 1200 block and hit a power pole, police said.

Sgt. Lyle Hagenbuch said Bruce thought she may have fallen asleep because she didn’t remember the curve in the road.

Bruce was taken by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital.

A representative from Westar Energy said the crash and subsequent replacement of the damaged power pole, caused roughly 900 residents to lose power.

Power was restored to customers by 2:15 a.m. Thursday, but that section of County Road 458 remained closed through the morning commute.
