A 26-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Saturday morning after threatening people outside Burrito King, 900 Illinois St.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, the incident began when the suspect and another man in the area became involved in an altercation. The two had exchanged words when the suspect produced a small knife and threatened the man and two of his friends. The man was able to push the suspect away.

Bordman said the suspect was the one who eventually called police to report the incident.

He was booked into the Douglas County Jail about 4:20 a.m. on charges of aggravated assault and criminal threat.

Something isn't adding up here. Why would the suspect inform police unless he thought it was a case of self defense? Perhaps it was a case of self defense, and the LPD overreacted. One person against multiple people in an altercation could be grounds for feeling threatened enough to produce a weapon. In CCH training people are counseled to always contact police in a self defense situation to tell your side of the story first. It's a fairly safe bet that alcohol would be involved at the King at that time of the morning. I would definitely be interested in a follow up to this story.

Maybe after the cops showed up and talked to everyone it turned out knife-guy went too far in his "defense". Or maybe his knife was a switchblade or something.

Are you implying a chemical was involved?

The disagreement was - whoever cut the burrito in half has to let the other guy choose.

---I had the same thought RE the booking time. I can just see the officer, "it's 4:10a.m., I think I'll just drag my feet so the booking time will be 4:20!" yes, why does the perp call?
