Competition among young pianists ends

Two young pianists came out ahead of their fellow competitors at Kansas University’s International Institute for Young Musicians on Monday evening.

Frank Wu, 15, of Chicago, and Chelsea De Souza, 16, of Mumbai, India, tied for second-place honors at the IIYM competition. Aileen Gozali, 15, of Singapore, finished in third place. Judges did not award a first-place prize.

Three other youths who were chosen to compete in the finals Monday were Joseph Eisele, 15, of Greenwood Village, Colo.; Jina Kim, 17, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Kevin Ahfat, 15, of Centennial, Colo.

All six pianists will perform in a winners’ concert scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Swarthout Recital Hall inside Murphy Hall at KU. Tickets are available for $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students, and may be purchased at the door.
