Police are searching for a suspect in a North Lawrence armed robbery that occurred early Sunday morning.
According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Ted Bordman, officers were dispatched to Sonic, 1003 N. Third St., just after midnight.
Two employees were inside the business at the time of the incident. The suspect was described as a black man about 5 feet 5 inches and around 150 pounds.
He was wearing a black scarf around part of his face, which the employees said was pitted or weathered-looking. The suspect was also wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, black pants and boots. He was armed with an unknown kind of firearm.
The suspect took an undetermined amount of cash and personal property before fleeing the scene on foot.
He was last seen headed southbound after the incident. Officers were searching the surrounding area for the suspect and any evidence that may have been dropped.
Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Lawrence police at 830-7430 or Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS.

Very glad no Sonic employees were shot during this holdup.
A number of Lawrence businesses are as vulnerable as this Sonic drive-in, in terms of conducting many cash transactions during late night/early morning hours. So I hope this robbery is "useful" in that other businesses will review their door entry procedures.
In businesses where employees must walk in and out the door a lot, it might help to install "card swipe" electronic door locks, or push-button combination locks. Both types of locks can be re-carded or re-programmed for fresh combinations on a regular basis. Such door lock devices would at least keep a robber from casually walking through the entry and confronting the night manager at gunpoint to grab the evening's accumulated cash.
