Suspend football?

To the editor:

With all of the talk of various ways to reduce expenses within the local school system, one wonders why no mention has been made of temporarily eliminating extracurricular activities! The suspension of football, for instance, although of benefit to many, for that very reason of the large numbers involved (both players and coaches) would likely provide the largest savings, but no mention of such an idea has been heard. Why not?

To evaluate which programs should be considered for suspension one needs to know first what the potential savings might be for each program considered. We would really like to have those figures available.

Of course, one knows that there are those who would consider such an idea hypocritical regardless of the savings potential, the same as there are those who do not want to consider increasing class sizes in THEIR school in order to save neighborhood schools elsewhere.
