A 37-year-old Fairway man was arrested early Sunday morning on two counts of aggravated assault after shots were fired from his car at another car.
According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, a report of gunshots came in shortly after midnight Sunday near 23rd and Naismith streets at the Burger King. A passerby heard the shots fired and then saw a red SUV speed off.
Hadl said police stopped and investigated a red SUV near 23rd and Louisiana in the Checkers parking lot. They determined it was the vehicle involved in the shooting and detained its five occupants.
Hadl said after extensive questioning, four of the occupants were released and one was arrested. She said the police believe the red SUV was pursuing a silver passenger car occupied by a runaway girl related to the shooter.
Officers later found the silver passenger car in a south-central Lawrence apartment complex. Both the 16-year-old runaway girl, also from Fairway, and an 18-year-old Lawrence man were uninjured.
Hadl said more charges could come after more questioning.
As of noon Sunday no additional arrests had been made in relation to the incident.
