11th, Indiana now a 2-way stop

Kansas University students and their parents will be making plenty of trips up and down 11th Street this weekend as they move into the residence halls. And when they do, drivers should be aware of a recent traffic change at the Indiana Street intersection.

In the past week, the four-way stop at 11th and Indiana changed to a two-way stop.

The four-way stop went into place during construction of the nearby Oread hotel about a year and a half ago.

David Woosley, a traffic engineer with the city of Lawrence, said studies showed that about twice as many cars travel on 11th than on Indiana. Plus, the city has designated 11th as a collector road and Indiana as a local one.

So stop signs were taken down at 11th. The two stop signs on Indiana remain. The city also added orange cones, flags and signs warning drivers that traffic doesn’t stop on 11th.
