LHS softball pummels Leavenworth

Lawrence High pitcher Lauren Massey delivers to the plate against Leavenworth during the first inning Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Lawrence High.

Days like Tuesday don’t come around too often, so Lawrence High’s softball team made sure to savor its afternoon during a doubleheader against visiting Leavenworth.

Lawrence High's Jamie Jarrett, left, is congratulated by Kasey Waite after scoring in the first inning against Leavenworth Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Lawrence High.

The smiles were plentiful during what proved to be the Lions’ most dominant offensive performance of the season, a day in which LHS outscored the Pioneers by a total of 27-0 (LHS won 9-0 in the first game and 18-0 in the second) and improved to 5-11.

“We were all just cheering (the whole time),” said junior Kasey Waite, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs in Game Two. “Every hit, we got louder.”

Things started off well for the Lions in the opening game. Holding a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions ripped off what to that point was one of their biggest innings of the season.

The first six batters reached base — including Rachel Kelly and Jamie Jarrett, who knocked back-to-back extra-base hits — as Lawrence High plated five runs to build its lead to 7-0 before adding a pair of security runs an inning later.

It didn’t hurt, either, that pitcher Lauren Massey proved nearly unhittable, giving up just three hits and striking out nine in seven innings to earn the Game One victory.

“For her pitching that good, we give her a lot of props,” senior Jamie Morgison said.

In the second game, the Lions didn’t slow down, scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding six more in the second before the game was called after 21?2 innings due to the lopsided score.

In addition to earning her second victory of the day on the mound, Massey finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Jarrett was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kristen Bell went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

If anything, LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill hopes Tuesday’s performance will instill a bit of confidence into a team that has won three games in a row after struggling to a 2-11 record to start the season.

“These are two games we should come out and win,” Stogsdill said. “But what I liked is that we came out and beat Leavenworth. We didn’t wait for them to beat themselves.”
