Top high school hoops players to be in town

Wichita Heights sensation Perry Ellis headlines a group of blue-chip high school sophomore basketball players who will be competing at the 2010 Jayhawk Invitational, Friday through Sunday at several gyms in town.

Ellis, 6-foot-8, 210 pounds from Heights, who last week was named ESPN RISE’s national sophomore of the year, will play in one of the marquee games of the entire tournament. His Pray and Play Players will meet Dream Vision at 6:10 p.m. Friday at Haskell’s Coffin Complex.

Super sophs Shabazz Muhammad (6-5, Bishop Gorman High, Las Vegas) and Winston Shepard (6-6, Findlay Prep, Henderson, Nev.) join junior Angelo Chol (6-8, 205, Hoover High, San Diego) on the Dream Vision roster. All four of those players have Kansas University on their lists of prospective colleges.

Pray and Play Players will play pool play games at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence High’s gym and 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the LHS west gym. Dream Vision will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Haskell and 3:20 p.m. Saturday at LHS west.

On Monday, Rivals.com reported that another top member of the Class of 2012 — Isaiah Austin — will be competing for the Compton Magic. Austin, 6-11, 200 from Grace Prep in Arlington, Texas, who has KU on his list, will play at 9:40 p.m. Friday at Lawrence High, 10:20 a.m. Saturday at Haskell and 5:40 p.m. Saturday at Haskell. Jahii Carson, 5-10, junior Mesa (Ariz.) High, also plays for the Magic.

A top junior with KU on his list is Ben McLemore, 6-5 from St. Louis’ Eskridge High. He and Florida commit Brad Beal will play for the St. Louis Eagles at 9:40 p.m. Friday at Haskell, 1 p.m. Saturday at LHS west and 3:20 p.m. Saturday at Haskell. McLemore is expected to miss the first game because of a prior commitment.

Pump and Run Elite, which is led by KU target Josiah Turner (6-3 junior Sacramento, Calif., High) will be playing at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Haskell, 9:10 a.m., Saturday at LHS West and 3:20 p.m., Saturday at the LHS gym.

The Dallas Mustangs and their group of junior standouts Lebryan Nash (6-7, Dallas Lincoln), Keaton Miles (6-7, Lincoln) and Devonta Abram (6-7, Dallas Seagoville) will play at 6:10 p.m. Friday at LHS west, 9:10 a.m. Saturday at Haskell and 2:10 p.m. Saturday at Central JH.

SYF Players, which is led by junior Branden Dawson (6-6, Wallace High, Gary, Ind.) will play at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Haskell, 9:10 a.m. Saturday at Central JH and 2:10 p.m. Saturday at Haskell.

The Derrick Rose All-Stars, who are led by juniors Michael Chandler (6-10, Indianapolis Lawrence North and Ryan Boatright (5-10, Aurora, Ill., East) will play at 9:40 p.m. Friday at Central, 10:20 a.m. Saturday at Haskell and 5:40 p.m. Saturday at LHS.

The local KC Pump N Run team, which has won the tourney four of the past five years, will play at 7:20 p.m. Friday at Haskell, 10:20 a.m. Saturday at LHS and 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Haskell. The team is led by 6-1 Raytown South junior Corey Hilliard.

Iowa State opening: The Des Moines Register has listed Kansas assistant Joe Dooley and former KU assistant Tim Jankovich (Illinois State head coach) as possible candidates for the Iowa State head-coaching position.

Dooley received 252 votes as of 9 p.m. Monday in the Register’s online poll of fans. Jankovich had 105 votes.

The fan favorite was former ISU player Fred Hoiberg of the Minnesota Timberwolves staff (949), followed by ISU associate head coach Nick Nurse (674) and Dayton’s Brian Gregory (401). Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik received 87 votes.
