Conditional zoning on retreat site supported

Douglas County commissioners on Wednesday night voiced support for conditional zoning and certain restrictions placed on land that is eyed for a rural corporate retreat between Lawrence and Lecompton.

Rockwall Farms LC on about 59 acres wants to build the retreat — known as The Woods — northeast of the intersection of North 1800 and East 700 roads. The site is about 1.5 miles west of the junction of the Kansas Turnpike and Kansas Highway 10.

Commissioners agreed to rezone the property for some business uses that would allow the retreat and conference center to operate, but it would restrict other business zoning uses like storage garages, filling stations and office buildings.

The applicants had asked for conditional zoning of the property, and they likely cleared their largest hurdle Wednesday night. The development group still has a few other things to take care of like getting a plat approved for the rezoning to officially take effect, county planning officials said.
