County to take up zoning for corporate retreat

Douglas County commissioners on Wednesday will consider approving conditional zoning for 59 acres, which would make way for a corporate rural retreat between Lawrence and Lecompton.

Rockwall Farms LC wants to build the retreat — known as The Woods — northeast of the intersection of North 1800 and East 700 roads. The site is about 1.5 miles west of the intersection of the Kansas Turnpike and Kansas Highway 10.

Earlier this month, commissioners approved a countywide policy to allow conditional zoning, which would restrict how property can be used if a suggested use does not fall under the county’s specific zoning classifications.

Neighbors at past meetings have voiced opposition to the project, including from leaders at the Rural Water District No. 6 who have concerns about sufficient water supply.

The commission will consider the rezoning request at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at the courthouse, 1100 Mass. Commissioners will start their meeting at 4 p.m. to consider administrative items.
