Lawrence soccer blanks SM North

Lawrence High’s Daouda Drame, left, watches a ball he heads for a shot on goal against SM North.

Not often does a soccer player kick the ball into the net twice within just 20 seconds.

Tor Fornelli did Tuesday night, helping Lawrence High spill Shawnee Mission North, 5-0, at the LHS football field.

“It felt pretty good,” Fornelli said of his two goals that came with less than 10 minutes elapsed, “because we needed to come out and score early before they could get into it.”

SM North never did get into it, mounting only six shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Lions converted five of 20 attempts.

Both of Fornelli’s early scores came off feeds from junior Gustavo Arroyo, the second after Arroyo stole the ball only about 30 yards from the goal mouth.

“Gustavo forced that turnover,” Fornelli said, “and I made sure I got up there.”

Goal No. 1 for Fornelli, a senior, came at 31:17. No. 2 occurred with 30:57 on the clock.

About seven minutes later, Noel Fisher dented the net for a 3-0 lead. Then Daouda Drame’s breakaway made it 4-0 with 12 minutes left before the break. And that’s the way it stayed until intermission.

“We were happy to be up four goals,” Lions coach Matt Anderson said. “But I told them that’s where we should be.”

Yet after that flurry of first-half goals, the Lions wouldn’t add their fifth goal until just 3:39 remained when senior captain Will Burg drilled a 25-footer up the gut.

In other words, after scoring four goals in the first 26 minutes, the Lions went nearly 49 minutes before scoring again and, according to Anderson, SM North had something to do with that.

“In a sport where two goals is a big deal,” Lions coach Matt Anderson said, “it’s tough to recover, but they did a good job. They adjusted.”

Still, at time the Lions were also their own worst enemy.

“Several times we had one too many touches,” Anderson said. “Sometimes we wanted that perfect alley, and they didn’t show up.”

Lawrence evened its record at 2-2 while SM North slipped to 2-3.

Next for the Lions will be a home game against Olathe North on Thursday night and, said Anderson, “We’d better hope we’re on for a full 80 minutes in that one.”
